Flea Control Services in Burnley

It probably comes as no surprise to discover that fleas can be a common occurrence in homes, especially in those with pets. Even if you don’t have animals in the house, you may discover a flea infestation when you move into a property where the previous owner kept pets.

Perhaps the greatest concern about the presence of fleas is the fact that they bite. While the bites aren’t painful, they can be extremely itchy and in the worst-case scenario develop into a nasty rash.

In addition, your pet may develop an allergy to the flea saliva.
Of course, if you have a flea infestation in your property, it is possible to treat the problem yourself. However, it’s much easier and more effective to call in the professionals.

At PestPass, we have years of experience in getting rid of flea infestations in a safe and effective way. We’re here to provide fast and efficient pest control services in Burnley and East Lancashire and offer a 24-hour emergency callout service if necessary.

Fighting Flea Infestations in Burnley and East Lancashire

Fortunately, human fleas are very much a thing of the past, however our pets can encounter fleas on their travels and bring them into our homes. Small and flightless, fleas are external parasites that need to feed on blood in order to lay eggs. The most common species are cat and dog fleas which are usually a red-brown colour and about 2mm in length. They don’t have wings, but they do have extremely powerful elongated legs that enable them to jump over long distances.

You’ll probably first suspect that your pet has fleas as they’ll be constantly scratching or biting themselves. While this may be some form of skin infection, it’s always wise to check for fleas first.

Can you see them crawling on your pet? They’re likely to be around your dog’s hindquarters or around a cat’s neck. Look for fine black droppings or ‘flea dirt’ on your pet or in their bedding.

In addition to feeding from your pet’s blood, the fleas will lay their eggs within your pet’s fur. The eggs can easily fall off your pet and become hidden in your carpets, rugs, soft furnishings and gaps between floorboards. Plus, as the eggs are tiny – around 0.5mm long – they are exceedingly difficult to spot with the naked eye.

A female flea can produce more than 25 eggs per day and, depending on
the temperature, it can take as little as 14 days for the egg to develop into an adult flea. This means that infestations can spread rapidly and so it’s vitally important that you start treatment as soon as you notice signs that fleas may be present.

In cooler temperatures, it can take a lot longer for adults to mature – up to 140 days in some cases. This makes it extremely difficult to be certain that any infestation has been completely eradicated and so to ensure successful treatment and control of fleas, both your premises and your pet will need to be treated.
